Sport Weight Socks

                                                    Materials:

sport weight sock yarn 3.5  mm straight knitting needles;

Tapestry needle to sew the side seams 

 

 

Abbreviations: sts =stitches; K =knit, P =purl; K 2tog =knit 2 stitches together to make 1 stitch; ssk = slip 2 stitches knitwise and knit these 2 stitches together through the back of the loop.

Gauge: 22 sts & 30 rows = 10 cm

Sizes: narrow, medium, wide. Measure the foot from heel to toe for the length.

Using Long Tail Cast On, cast on 48 [ 50, 52 ] sts over both needles held together.

Row 1: *K 2, P 2, repeat form * to end of row.

Row 2: * knit the knit sts, and purl the purl sts as they face you, repeat from * to end of row.     

These two rows form 2x2 ribbing.

Continue in ribbing for 1 - 1 ½ inches.

Begin working in Stockinette stitch as follows:

Row 1: Knit.

Row 2: Purl.

Repeat these two rows for 8 inches.

Short Row Heel Shaping

Right side facing: K 23 [ 24, 25 ], bring yarn forward, slip next st, bring yarn back around the slipped st and turn your work. [This is called wrap & turn.]

Purl 22 [ 23, 24 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Knit 21 [ 22, 23 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Purl 20 [ 21, 22] sts, wrap & turn.

Knit 19 [ 20, 21 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Purl 18 [ 19, 20 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Continue in this way until 5 [ 6, 7 ] sts remain between turns.

Purl 5 [ 6, 7], then purl slipped sts and wraps together, to end of row.

Next row: Knit 14 [ 15, 16 ], knit slipped sts and wraps together, continue knitting the last 24, [ 25, 26 ] sts of that row.

Next row: Purl

Next row: Knit.

Continue in Stockinette st until you reach 2 inches less than the length of your foot from heel to tip of toe.

Begin Toe Shaping

Row 1; K 1, ssk, K 18 [ 19, 20 ], K 2tog, K 2, ssk, K 18 [ 19, 20 ], K 2tog, K 1.

Row 2: Purl.

Row 3: K 1, ssk, K 16 [ 17, 18 ], K 2tog, K 2, ssk, K 16 [17, 18 ], K 2tog, K 1.

Row 4: Purl.

Row 5: K 1, ssk, K 14 [15, 16 ], K 2tog, K 2, ssk, K 14 [15, 16 ], K 2tog, K 1.

Row 6: Purl.

Row 7: K 1, ssk, K 12 [13, 14 ], K 2tog, K 2, ssk, K 12 [ 13, 14 ], K 2tog, K 1.

Row 8: Purl.

Row 9: K 1, ssk, K 10 [11, 12 ], K 2tog, K 2, ssk, K 10 [ 11, 12 ], K 2tog, K 1.

Row 10: Purl.

Row 11: K 1, ssk, K 8 [ 9, 10 ], K 2tog, K 2, ssk, K 8 [ 9, 10 ], K 2tog, K 1.

Row 12: Purl 12 [13, 14] fold in half with right sides together.

Using a Three needle bind off, bind off these sts for the toe.

Sew side seam using a flat, or bickford seam.

Second Sock

Cast on 48 sts and work sock as for the first sock until you reach Short Row Heel Shaping.

Purl 23 [ 24, 25 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Knit 22 [ 23, 24 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Purl 21 [ 22, 23] sts, wrap & turn.

Knit 20 [ 21, 22 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Purl 19 [ 20, 21 ] sts, wrap & turn.

Continue in this way until 5 [ 6, 7 ] sts remain between turns.

K 5, then knit slipped sts and wraps together to end of row.

P 14, [ 15, 16 ] purl slipped sts and wraps together, purl 24, [ 25, 26 ].

Next row: Purl

Next row: Knit.

Continue in Stockinette st until you reach 2 inches less than the length of your foot from heel to tip of toe.

Work the toe shaping as for the first sock.

Sew the side seam using a Flat, or Bickford seam.

Wear socks with seams on the insides of the ankle.
